Student-Designed Cervical Models Are Helping With Cervical Cancer Training In Malawi

March 4, 2019

The Texan/Malawian design, known as Low-cost Universal Cervical cancer Instructional Apparatus (LUCIA) is versatile, with gel forms that change color to reveal lesions and texture to reveal cysts. And rather than needing separate models to practice different techniques, like biopsy, cryotherapy and Pap smears, LUCIA is a kind of one-stop shop. (A demo video illustrates some of these uses.)

Rice U. engineer honored for inventions that diagnose cancer, save babies

 

Global health pioneer Rebecca Richards-Kortum, a Rice University bioengineering professor whose work has improved medical care for millions of newborn babies and saved lives in low-income countries, will be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in May.
