DESIGN COMPETITION

The Rice 360° Institute for Global Health 11th Annual Undergraduate Global Technologies Design Competition will feature 3 student teams from national and international universities who will present low-cost technologies they have designed to address global health challenges in low-resource settings. Judges from industry, academia and medicine will evaluate the designs.

Keynote Speaker - Dr. Data Santorino

​

Dr. Santorino is currently the Uganda Country Manager for CAMTech Uganda and is also a Pediatrician and Lecturer at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST). Dr. Santorino has championed the creation of an Innovations Ecosystem that includes the monthly MUST Innovation Café, an Innovation office, a Co-Creation laboratory and a students’ innovation internship program that targets medical technology development for Low and Middle Income Countries. His work with CAMTech Uganda led to the establishment of the MUST Center for Innovation and Technology Transfer (CITT) that he currently leads as founding Director.

 

He is collaboratively involved in the development of the Augmented Infant Resuscitator, an add-on device to existing bag-valve-masks that monitors and provides instant feedback on resuscitation quality. He founded the Simulation for Life program that currently partners with medical and nursing training institutions to scale medical simulation methodologies in Africa. Dr. Santorino has a wealth of experience in research, teaching, innovation management and program implementation.
